The Salkantay Trek to Machupicchu, was specially designed to give you the best views of the snow-capped mountains of Humantay and Salkantay, sacred Apus (god mountains) of the Inkas. This is a unique trekking route where you visit two incredible turquoise glacial lakes: Humantay and Salkantay. Will trek through the Andes Mountain range with its spectacular scenery and views of the colorful valley. You also will visit the fascinating Llactapata ruins, where you have a spectacular view of Machupicchu, the day before you visit this Inka city, New 7 Wonder of the World and UNESCO World Heritage site!

Day 1

Cusco - Mollepata - Humantay Lagoon - Soraypampa

We’ll pick you up at your hotel between 4:30 am and 5:00 am, to drive for 2 and a half hours to Mollepata where we stop for breakfast. Then we will continue driving to Challacancha where we start the walk; In this place the cook and muleteer will pack all the camping equipment and kitchen utensils, before start the tour. The first 25 minutes will be a bit uphill to reach the water channel where we will have a nice place with panoramic views of beautiful snowy mountains (Humantay; 4120m / 13500ft and Salkantay; 6271m / 20575ft) - just the beginning! We will start our Salkantay trek towards Soraypampa our first camping spot (3800 m / 11750ft; the highest and coldest campsite of the trip) we will be very close to the second highest Salkantay snow-capped mountain of Cusco. Then after lunch we will go to Humantay Lagoon, and explore the surroundings and descend to our camp in Soraypampa.

Day 2

Soraypampa - Salkantay Pass - Huaracmachay - Chaullay

After having breakfast, we started walking around 6:30 am towards Salkantay Mountain. This day will be the longest; the first 4 hours are uphill to reach the highest point where we will find the Salkantay Pass (4,650m / 15200ft) located halfway between 2 huge mountains; The Salkantay Mountain on the right and Tucarhuay on the left. From the pass, the view of the 2 peaks are incredible (Possible presence of snow on the pass). After a break, we will continue our trek descending through a cloud forest on our way to Huayracpunku, where we will have lunch. Then we continue the walk getting into the high jungle where our second camp is located, in Chaullay or Colcapampa (3,000m / 9800ft).

Day 3

Chaullay - LLuscamayo - Playa Sahuayaco

At 6:30 a.m., after having breakfast, we started walking across the Lluskamayo River. This path introduces us to a forest with more vegetation and a warmer climate, so the tour will continue for approximately 6 hours until we reach Playa Sahuayaco, where we will have lunch. Rest of the afternoon free to rest.

(Optional: in the afternoon there is the possibility of going to the hot springs of Colcalmayo, it has an extra cost that you can see once you are there)

Day 3: Total distance: 16 km (approx.)

Day 4

Playa Sahuayaco - Lucmabamba - Llactapata - Hydroelectric - Aguas Calientes (Hotel)

We will have breakfast at 7:00 am, and leave our campsite. We walk up on an original Inka trail to the archaeological site of Llactapata where we will get a chance to see Machupicchu far away (one of the most beautiful place to see Machupicchu), then we continue walking, and we pass through places with a lot of vegetation, where we find a variety of plants and fruits such as coca, banana, etc. until we reach the hydroelectric station, where we stop for lunch. Afterwards, we will continue walking for another two and a half hours, along the train road, until we reach our hostel in Aguas Calientes town (Machupicchu Town). In Aguas Calientes, you can take advantage of the thermal springs (entry S/10 or US$3.5) a real treat after finishing the Salkantay Trek.

Day 4: Total distance: 14.5 km (approx.)

Day 5

Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Aguas Calientes - Ollantaytambo - Cusco
Important day, we wake up very early at 4:30 am, to have breakfast and begin our walk towards Machupicchu, which will take us approximately 1:30 hours until we reach the check point of the Inka city. Once in Machupicchu, we will start our 2-hour guided tour, to know the main places. After the visit, you will walk down to the town of Aguas Calientes, where you will have the rest of the afternoon free, to have lunch, and visit the craft fair, until the time we board the train that will take you to Ollantaytambo, where our transport will wait to take you to Cusco (Final stop, near the main square).

This last day you have the following options:
• You can buy a bus ticket to go up to Machupicchu (25 minutes)
• You can add to the program, the entrance ticket to Waynapicchu Mountain (2720m / 8890ft) or Machupicchu Mountain (one hour to get to the top)

  • STORAGE: Most Hotels have storage where you can leave the rest of your stuff while you hike to Machupicchu, but if they don’t have a place you can leave your stuff in our storage with no extra cost. (Let us know at the time of briefing)
