Cusco is an Andean place privileged by nature and history; the capital of the Inka Empire houses in its territory wonders of all kinds such as the impressive Rainbow Mountain “Winikunka” the mountain of colors at 16,732 ft (5,100 meters) above sea level.

Its name comes from two Quechua voices: “Wini”, for the rounded and heavy black stones that abound in the area, which were called “wini rumi” (stone). The second is “Kunka” which means neck because of the narrowness of the hills. Winikunka Mountain is behind the imposing snowy Ausangate, which is part of the Vilcanota mountain range in Cusco. It a beautiful valley precisely in the lower part of the Ausangate and which flows into the great Vilcanota River.

“Apu” was the name by which the Inka civilization called the mountains to which they attributed mystical powers. Although most of these majestic mountains were covered with snow, there was one that stood out for its many beautiful colors: “Winikunka” Mountain, also known as “the mountain of 7 colors” or “Rainbow Mountain”.

This hike to the Rainbow Mountain will leave you with a truly memorable experience, a combination of colorful landscapes, and snowy mountains. On the hike you may see, vicunas, llamas, alpacas, chinchillas, and with luck you will be able to see condors.

Day 1

The adventure begins very early at 04:30 am. We will start picking you up at your hotels, and will continue our trip by bus to the picturesque town of Cusipata (Quispicanchi) south of the city of Cusco, where we will stop to have breakfast (you can find here some necessary things to start the trek such as water or energy drinks, snacks, cereals, etc.)

After reaching the starting point of the walk, we will be hiking up for about 1 ½ hours, along a path between mountains of intense colors and small streams of icy water that feed and give life to this valley. After a while, we will arrive at the viewpoint of the Winikunka mountain (rainbow mountain), from there you can also see the Vilcanota mountain range in all its splendor.

This will be the point where we will have enough time to take pictures, videos, or just soak up the view. At the same time, it will be the place where we will enjoy our snack while our sight delights with the magic that the mountains enclose behind its veil of clouds and snowy peaks. We will spend approximately 40 minutes at this point. Afterwards, there is an optional hike through the Red Valley.  This walk takes another hour until arrive to Llaqto, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us for lunch (This last section through the Red Valley is optional, if your
